Flag Day; An Elks Tradition:

IMAGINE THIS

            Flag Day 2008

We ask you good people to imagine the picture I am going to paint for you. In June of 2008, imagine all the Elk's Lodges planning a special day with their communities to Celebrate Flag Day. It is an important day for all Elk's. Did you know Patriotism has characterized the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America since the early days of the organization. Allegiance to the flag of our country is a requirement of every member.

In 1907, the BPO Elks Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.

The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order's observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. But it was not until 1949 when President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14 would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country.

Now take it another step and imagine the people it takes to put on a Flag Day Observance You have the Elk's, Community Leaders, and the people them- selves who participate in this event. This year we as a group have planned new and exciting events for the public. The hard work will go unnoticed because we the committee will have so much fun when the work is done and we can participate. Can you imagine the happy children, young adults, and ones who really know what this day means to be free and to carry a flag in every hand. This symbol is near and dear to an Elk and they display their knowledge by giving you a History of the Flags. The ceremony of the Elks is moving and enlightening, Can't you see the marchers in the parade as they too celebrate with us.

IMAGINE! On June 14, 2008, all the people on the sidelines watching brothers and sisters, fathers, mothers doing their part. This role may be as a vendor selling their wares, participating in the parade itself, playing music for our benefit and just enjoying themselves.

Our local area will be colorful and festive, the smells of the food, the beverages that will be sold to quinch our thirst. There will be informational booths, petting zoos, crafters who will spend long hours providing services to our community. The activities will be outstanding this year and be sure to visit the waterfront for the various activities that are planned.

I have asked you to imagine the sights of this event, but wouldn't it be more realistic to be there to experience it firsthand. Thank the Elk's, and the Community Leaders for their hard work. When we march past you, please show our symbol of the Flag with pride.

LONG LIVE THE ELKS AND LET THE FLAG WAVE FOREVER!
